Polly Wants a Cracker-The Edgewater Parrots

Edgewater is home to a free-flying colony of Monk Parakeets, also known as Quaker Parrots. They are small, green parrots that have lived in Edgewater since 1980 and at last count (in 2008) were numbered at 230 in the flock. The lovely little birds are easily seen in the Memorial Park, along the River Road area, and Route 5. The parrots build large, permanent nests that make their nesting spots easy to find and observe. It is unknown how the birds came to be in Edgewater, but is is speculated that they escaped form a damaged crate at John F. Kennedy Airport in the 1960s.
